Silk Rya Sample

March 31, 2009

This is a Rya Rug sample using Silk.  Not, perhaps the most practical rug, but this is just a sample and it is luscious.  I used silk thrums from a silk shawl .  I had dyed the yarn in gradations from violet to blue for warp and a darker blue for weft.  The shawl was beautiful, sold very quickly and I don’t have a photograph.

The silk is 12/2 spun silk, the warp 8/4 Swedish linen.   Ghiordes knots are formed over two warp ends and under and up between those warp ends.  Each row of knots is staggered and picks of plain weave between  hold the knots in place.   To blend the colour the knots were made up of multiple coloured ends which changed with each row.

The sample is  finished with a half damascus variation.  End 1 is knotted with end 2, carried under end 3 and left pointing toward the sample and later darned in.  The final 6 ends are braided together and knotted.  You can see I pulled it too tightly and the ends come in (though this is somewhat magnified by the camera  😉  ).

How beautiful! A pity no picture of the shawl but I can almost imagine how lovely it was in those colors.

    Hi Evelyn!
Great to see that you are blogging. I look forward to seeing your GCW samples.

I have placed a link to your page at mine so it might increase your traffic!

I also heard through Louise S. that you had recently moved from SSI to the interior. Big change! I moved from the Okanagan to Duncan.

I’ll be stopping by to see what you’re up to…
    Cheerio, Susan

Sorry for the continued updates on this page – for some reason there is always spam coming in, perhaps to do with the name? So another change.
