Tapestry Sample

April 30, 2009

tapestry-002

Woven for the Guild of Canadian Weavers Test and my first piece of tapestry.  I did a 2 week course at Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts with Jane Kidd in 1992 (if I remember correctly!)  and  began preparing for this piece.   A wonderful two weeks away soley devoted to weaving and arts.

The inspiration was from a trip to Australia where   a building with colourful tiles formed the borders of a garden of ferns and lush greenery.   The tapestry is woven bottom to top which in retrospect  should have been done sideways.  I used a cotton seine twine warp sett 6 epi and Lamieux Wool weft in various weights and  mercerized cottons and linen thrums.   I  blended the colours and yarns as I wove, working to make sure the relative diameters of the bundles were similar.
